Galata Tower
The Galata Tower was actually called the Tower of Christ, erected for the first time as early as 1384, before the Ottoman occupation of the city (1453). Build by the Genoese people it was the heart of their district surrounded by thick walls, looking to the Topkapi Palace on the other side of the Golden Horn.
The tower was reconstructed several times and also fulfilled various purposes. It was a lookout, a prison, served as astronomical observatory and was also used as garrison for the Janissaries, the elite corps of the Ottoman army. There even is a tunnel underneath it, and although it is not open for visitors it makes the tower just even more interesting and also kind of spooky… Today it is a tourist attraction with a restaurant and nightly belly dancing entertainment. Where ever you are, the Tower really sticks out of the skyline of Istanbul and that comes in handy when you have lost your way.
To enjoy the quite spectacular 360 degree view, you must purchase a ticket (10 YTL = 5 Euro) and then take the elevator (you can’t use the stairs) to the top. You shouldn’t be afraid of heights, as there is no security glass or grid. Enjoy the view!
After getting down enjoy a Turkish Cay at the Gündogdun Café and walk around the really nice area around the Galata Tower.
Why Should I Go
